(Re)latinizing Latin into Roman areas. Historical and political factors, linguistic and metalinguistic data

Abstract
This paper deals with the notion of (re)latinization from Latinization phenomena in Roman areas and in Latin language. After identifying the relevant problematics, we articulate the historical and political factors with metalinguistic and linguistic data. We thus trace the evolution by which Latin constituted itself as a language, first of all in projection then in reaction to Greek. In the last part of this work, we analyze some phenomena of (re)latinization, based on lexicographic entries and examples taken from epigraphic, literary and grammatical documentation.
La présente contribution se propose de réfléchir sur la notion de (re)latinisation en prenant pour point d’ancrage le domaine latin et la langue latine. Après une identification des enjeux posés par l’intitulé, l’étude se poursuit en articulant les facteurs historico-politiques aux données métalinguistiques et linguistiques. Nous retraçons ainsi l’évolution qui fit que le latin se constitua comme langue, tout d’abord en projection puis en réaction face au grec, et achevons le propos en rendant compte, à partir d’entrées lexicales et d’exemples tirés de documents épigraphiques, littéraires et artigraphiques, de phénomènes de (re)latinisation.
