Populism, Far Right and the Staging of the Migration Crisis
Populisme, extrême droite et mise en scène de la crise migratoire
Abstract
This article takes a critical look at the links between migration and populism. Using concepts from the discursive-performative approach to populism, it develops the notion of “mise en crise” that is part of the populist style, and describes how the far right constructs its crisis narrative around the supposed danger posed by immigration. Populism thus enables the far right to present its xenophobic struggle through a transgressive, popular framework.
Cet article interroge de façon critique les liens entre migration et populisme. Par l’emploi des concepts de l’approche discursive-performative du populisme, il développe la notion de « mise en crise » qui fait partie du style populiste et décrit la façon dont l’extrême droite construit son narratif de crise autour du danger supposé que pose l’immigration. Le populisme permet ainsi à l’extrême droite de présenter son combat xénophobe à travers un cadre transgressif et populaire.
