The Stylistic Approach to Populism: From Early Definitions to Interdisciplinary Hybridisation

Résumé

This chapter provides a detailed overview of the stylistic approach to populism. Discussing the interaction between form and content, the chapter challenges the mainstream definition of populism as a thin ideology by arguing that it is better seen as a way of framing politics. After a genealogy of the way populism was defined as a style, the chapter engages with the foundational work of Benjamin Moffitt who provided the first systematic approach to the populist style. Pointing to the limits of his definition, the chapter makes the case for an interdisciplinary hybridization of the stylistic approach through the lens of the grammar of politics and performance. By mobilizing the literature on performance studies, the chapter thus defines and demonstrates the centrality of concepts like performance, performativity and repertoire for understanding populism as a political style. Finally, this chapter concludes by considering the insights that such a perspective provides to left-wing forms of populism.
